Yeah, but the study’s not really about that. They looked at the relationship between self-awareness and quality of life, but it’s not clear that this is just a correlation between self-awareness and quality of life. It could also be that people who are more self-aware are also happier.
You might be thinking, “I don’t get the correlation, I just work for the government, why would I care about self-awareness?” Well, the study is based on a survey taken of 5,000 people. A study that you can’t just do on people. In order to do a study like this you need at least 10,000 people. The study only looked at people in the United States.
Its not clear what the researchers were even measuring with that survey, so we’re not certain whether people who are more aware of themselves are more likely to be happy.
While it may be true that people who are more aware of what they think and do tend to be happier, this doesn’t necessarily mean that people are more intelligent. It just means being more aware of your actions and thoughts can have a positive effect on your level of happiness.
The study is a good example of the “top-down” approach. In fact, we’re talking about the top-down approach, which is to “take out” people, but in this case the top-down approach results in a lot of people feeling happier, and the bottom-up approach results in a lot of people feeling more positive.
I can’t get enough of this study. It’s like studying that people are happier and more productive when they are better informed. It’s like in a study that people are healthier when they exercise.
