What you want to be doing with statistics is to gather data, and the best way to do so is to have an accurate and detailed understanding of the information you are gathering. You will learn how to perform the analysis and how to interpret the results. The more you know the data, the more confident you will be in your conclusions and the more effective you will be as a researcher, the better you will be as a student and the better you will be as a teacher.
I am very glad you brought up this subject in the first place. One of the things I love about undergrad and graduate students is that we all have very different ways of approaching research, with some of us using the same methods (for example, data collection and analysis) some of us doing it a little differently (for example, trying to answer a question in a different way), and some of us doing it in a completely different way (for example, using an iterative statistical approach).
This is a great topic for our undergraduate students, many of whom are not familiar with the term “statistical method.” The term statistical method is actually a bit misleading, since it is not limited to the use of statistics. It can refer to any number of techniques that are applied to data in order to answer a question.
The term statistical method is a bit of a misnomer. Statistical methods are not limited to the “use of statistics.” Statistics is also applied to data to answer a question. In fact, when looking for an answer to a question, it’s often better to use statistics than to use a specialized statistical method. For example, many statistical methods would not be applicable to a question like “How many people do you think this person is?” or “What is the prevalence of this statistic?”.
You can see this when looking at a statistic based on a group of people. For example, “The prevalence of the statistic = ________”. However, if you want a statistic based on the number of people in a group, you need to use a special statistical method called Pearson’s chi-square. The chi-square statistic is very simple, and many statistics programs will do this automatically.
The Pearsons chi-square statistic is a powerful statistic that can calculate two-sided confidence intervals of the test statistic (which is how you can say ________ is more than a confidence interval of the difference between two test statistic, i.e., “the difference between two test statistic is less than zero”). In Chapter 6, this chapter covers the Pearsons chi-square statistic. And this one doesn’t really cover the statistics.
